Ylang Ylang By Yuko Nagayama
Champagne-coloured chains reinforce the brand’s image, and floor lighting emphasizes the light, airy ambience of the interior.

Architect Yuko Nagayama designed the first Ylang Ylang flagship store in Tokyo for Ryunosuke Aoyagi’s fashions, which – like the scent of the ylang-ylang tree – are all about desire.

Like the scent of the ylang-ylang, a blossoming tree native to Indonesia that produces ‘the flower among flowers’, Ryunosuke Aoyagi’s fashions are all about evoking desire. No wonder his feminine feel-good clothes are popular among young, self-confident Japanese women. Asked to interpret the brand for the general public, architect Yuko Nagayama designed the brand’s first flagship store in Tokyo. ‘Ylang Ylang is famous for beautiful dresses with interesting drapery,’ explains Nagayama. ‘By hanging stainless-steel chains in looping garlands from the ceiling, I gave the interior a natural look that seems to be shaped by gravity – and that refers to Aoyagi’s drapery. From outside, the interior appears to contain a big cage. The shape of the cage defines the view from the street and forms the face of the brand. I hope my design helps shoppers to understand the interior and the brand’s image as a whole.’
