Community Centre By Matrix Design

Textile designer Fabia Zindel of Matrix Design created these yellow doors that tell a story that's understood only by the inhabitants of Seltisberg, Switzerland.

When the municipality of Seltisberg, Switzerland, decided to add a community centre to an existing school, the assignment for the design of the new-build volume went to Buchner Bründler Studer Strasser Architekten. Eye-catching yellow doors, which fold to slide open and shut, are the work of textile designer Fabia Zindel of Matrix Design. Light enters the interior through perforations in these doors. In earlier days, people in and around Seltisberg wove ribbons of silk brocade at home to sell in the city. Although much of the world’s silk comes from China, through domestic industry such as ribbon-making, the precious material brought work and wealth to Switzerland as well. ‘I found a collection of old punched cards,’ says Zindel. ‘These perforated rolls were used throughout the 19th century for controlling single rows of weaving.’ Basing her design on one of these cards, she gave the contemporary facility a familiar look.
