Sony At Salone Del Mobile

Sony’s design team has invited London-based designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby to create an original and experiential installation at this year’s Salone in Milan.

Next month, Sony will be exhibiting for the first time at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Their installation space will be transformed into an anechoic chamber – a space with very low ambient noise – constructed from sound absorbing cones. Visitors may get the feeling they’re inside a futuristic recording studio in this unusual space, which will consist of five different areas. Each area will demonstrate an expression of Sony technology which melds sound experiments with material design.

Selected for their experience and furniture and lighting design, Barber and Osgerby are working with Sony designers to explore the minimal essence of Sony’s ‘Monolithic Design’ concept. The idea behind this design strategy is to remove excessive elements to produce simple and clean designs. By eliminating elements such as external buttons and speakers from visible surfaces, the products are less intrusive in a room’s interior.

With the desire to build on their current design direction and take it to the next level, Sony has welcomed the opportunity to showcase at the Salone. Their space will provide a platform for exhibiting both their design concepts and this range of products that explores ways of integrating domestic products and Monolithic Design within contemporary lifestyles.

Sony’s space at the Officine Stendhal, Via Stendhal 35 in the Zona Tortona is open between 14th – 19th April.
