Hotel Amangiris By Adrian Zecha Et Al.
Thirty-four rooms and an impressive outdoor swimming pool meander over the site as erratically as the surrounding sandstone rock formations.

Taking full advantage of the nation’s scenic magnificence, Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha built Hotel Amangiri in Canyon Point, Utah, which truly offers rooms with a view.

The most memorable aspect of a road trip across the United States is the gradually changing landscape, a succession of deserts, lakes, mountains, parks and stunning canyons. Taking full advantage of the nation’s scenic magnificence, Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha built a resort at the point where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona come together to form the Four Corners, an area of natural beauty still largely occupied by the Navajo Indians. ‘We wanted to build something that would be a contemporary interpretation of native Indian architecture, not perfectly adapted but hopefully generating the same sense and spirit,’ explains Zecha. A pavilion with living room, dining room, library and gallery forms the heart of the hotel, the centre of two wings that hold a total of 34 rooms and meander over the site as erratically as the surrounding sandstone rock formations. ‘The resort had to respect the natural environment – this was the most important aspect of the whole development,’ says Zecha, who realized the project in collaboration with architects Rick Joy, Marwan Al-Sayed and Wendell Burnett. Smoothly surfaced walls reflect the natural light that bathes this desert environment, and thanks to a wall of windows in every suite, the outdoor panorama determines not only the hotel’s architecture but also its interiors. The traveller who spends some time here – relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking views – had better arrive with bulging pockets. One Amangiri-style night in the desert will set you back between $950 and $3000.
